Following a shortened Pilates Mat Class ( 30-45 minutes ) to invigorate the mind/body connection, Phoebe will delve into the subject of scoliosis and its various forms. Whether idiopathic or congenital scoliosis can be very challenging for the person with it and the Pilates exercises have many options to help strengthen and stretch muscles which are often uneven due to hyper spinal curves. This workshop will focus on the "garden variety S curve" but there will also be information on other types of curves, as well as spinal fusions and vertebral body tethering. With time limitations for this workshop our focus will be solely with the exercises on the Reformer and the Mat that help elongate musculature and alleviate pain and sometimes even lessen scoliosis. There are a number of variations and options that are most beneficial for those with spinal curvatures. Most of these options were taught to Phoebe by Romana.
Phoebe Higgins, PMA Gold Certified, studied and performed with the School of American Ballet, Simonson Jazz Dance Technique, and The Kevin Wynn Collection, among others. From 1967-1968 Phoebe also attended ballet classes taught by ballerina and Master Pilates Teacher Romana Kryzanowska. Phoebe was reintroduced to Romana in 1976 at SUNY Purchase and began working with Romana to strengthen a spine weakened by scoliosis and a spinal fusion. Upon graduation in 1980 Phoebe went to work at the original Pilates Studio, under Romana's guidance. When that studio was forced to close in 1989 she began a program with chiropractor Howard Sichel in his office that over the years evolved into Power Pilates. In 2000 and 2005 repectively Phoebe was approached by The School of American Ballet and Ballet Academy East to organize programs to strengthen their teenage professionally geared students. Both programs proved most successful, with dancers avoiding injury and improving ballet technique. Since 2006 Phoebe has been teaching freelance, both to individuals and in workshops. In 2017 she was asked by her former student and friend Bob Liekens to assist teacher training for The Pilates Standard. This has been most rewarding as we bring this amazing program from Europe back to the USA.
